Mining the Golden Seam Exhibition in Paris -

February 2014

Members of the Embroiderers’ Guild from around the North East are preparing to take their work to a prestigious show, L’Aiguille-en-Fete, which takes place annually in Paris and attracts a broad European audience.

‘Mining a Golden Seam’ is a collection of inspirational pieces of embroidery with examples of both traditional stitched techniques and contemporary textile art.   It illustrates the diversity of this art form in the 21st century whilst retaining, supporting and extending the skills which have been shared through successive generations.

Our members were inspired by the theme to interpret and create their pieces for this regional exhibition. Some chose to illustrate the life and work of communities of the north in which the mining industry played a major role.  Inspiration also came from mining the riches of the earth around us and has been taken further as a metaphor for exploring and valuing those things which enrich our personal lives. A group of members chose to mine their memories of family and landscape to create a panel of varied pieces.
